A heartbroken bride was left stranded at the altar and ended up leaving everything behind, so she could travel the world alone, but it seems things have continued to get better and better for her.
Katy Collins, 30, quit her job, sold her house and car, before booking a one-way ticket to south-east Asia after she was left standing at the altar on her big day.
The saying goes ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ and little did Katy know, that her impulse decision would lead to her achieving a childhood dream of becoming a published author, whilst experiencing the world at the same time.
Katy Collins backpacked around Thailand, India and Nepal, securing a three-book deal with Carina UK, part of world-renowned publisher Harper Collins.
She was apparently left confused and disillusioned with life after the unfortunate event and decided to take the plunge and go travelling on her own.
Katy said: “Everyone did think I was a little mad, especially as I’d never travelled anywhere by myself before, but it just felt right.
‘I needed time away from everything and everyone I knew to find myself, but it wasn’t as cheesy as that.’
Katy had studied Journalism and English at Salford University and says that she had always dreamed of one day writing a novel.
During her travels, she wrote a blog, Not Wed or Dead, which aimed to keep family and friends updated on her trip, but found it kept getting more and more popular.
She didn’t feel down for too long about the whole ordeal and describes it as ‘the wakeup call she needed’.
“I received messages from other newly-single men and women who said they read my blog as an inspiration – that just because you’ve been dumped it doesn’t mean you have to listen to bad power anthems and devour ice-cream.
“You can use this as a catalyst for something much bigger and better.”
“I have climbed an active volcano in Chile, slept in a Thai jungle, got covered in Holi powder in India, skydived in France, and even taken a flight past Mount Everest.
“I’ve experienced things that I would never have dreamed possible but the highlight is being able to call myself a writer. Nothing compares to that.
“I am a huge optimist and believe that everything happens for a reason. Life is about saying yes, being brave and knowing deep down that it will all end up alright.”
Katy’s first novel in The Lonely Hearts Travel Club series, is a light-hearted romantic comedy, which has been described as “Bridget Jones goes backpacking”.
Destination Thailand, the first book in the series, follows Georgia Green who spends what should have been her big day, instead crying into a sex-on-the-beach cocktail wondering what had just happened.
