Tourists are furious after a captive Killer Whale appeared to try and kill itself during a show in Tenerife.
The orca is named Morgan and is owned by SeaWorld. She breached herself for 10 minutes, lying motionless at Loro Parque in the Canary Islands.
Footage has also emerged on Facebook, which has caused people to call for her to be released back into her natural habitat.
If a killer whale is beached for too long, the weight of their body can crush their internal organs and muscles. Their weight is normally supported by the buoyancy of the water.
Animal rights organisation The Dolphin Project said: “While we cannot explain the reason for her behaviour, the juxtaposition of a previously wild orca against the stark backdrop of the park’s performance area is unsettling to say the least.
‘Some people took selfies with Morgan in the background. Sadly, Morgan was still out of the water by the time the videographers had to leave.’
The Loro Parque theme park have since released a statement: ‘The video published by the Dolphin Project on its website is a new attempt at manipulation through exaggeration and dramatization of a completely normal situation in which there is no problem for the animals.’
